Use of the Welsh Language
The medium of teaching and day-to-day communication is English. Welsh is taught across the age and ability range as a second language to all students up to GCSE level.
Incidental references in Welsh feature in all lessons, as appropriate, bilingual signs are evident and all subject areas have guidelines on how to make lessons relevant to Wales.
The school celebrates and promotes Welshness in various ways, with the annual School Eisteddfod in July being one of the highlights.
In exceptional individual cases, such as latecomers to the school or where circumstances due to ability indicate, alternative provision may be negotiated with the Learning Managers for Welsh and Inclusion.
The Welsh Department offer an After School Club on a day to suit participants.
Physical Education
Physical Education and Sport plays a major part in the curricular and extra-curricular life of the school. We encourage all our students to develop an appreciation of health and fitness with the benefits of following an active lifestyle. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum throughout both Keystages. Our students also receive 18 lessons of health-related exercise during each school year
Facilities
Our superb range of facilities include a swimming pool, a 24 station fitness suite (140 sq M), a sports hall, gymnasium, 6 football/rugby pitches, an astro-turf pitch, 4 netball courts and 4 tennis courts.
Extra-curricular Activities
All students have the opportunity to get involved in both competitive and non-competitive activities during lunch time and after school. The school enters teams in competitive leagues and tournaments in football, netball, athletics, tennis and rounders. Other extra-curricular activities include hockey, badminton, girls’ football and health-related exercise. The school also has a secondary schools’ 5X60 Sports Organiser in place, which greatly extends the range of extra-curricular activities on offer.
